Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a direct precursor to NAD+, the essential co‑factor that drives mitochondrial energy production. Dr. Jason Schuster explains how supplementing with NMN can boost cellular metabolism, support DNA repair, and influence longevity.

WHAT IS NMN

A direct NAD+ precursor

NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a vitamin B‑derivative found in every human cell. It is the first molecular precursor that can cross the cell membrane and be converted into NAD+, the co‑enzyme mitochondria need for ATP production. Dr. Schuster emphasizes that NMN is naturally occurring, inexpensive, and, according to animal studies, shows no severe adverse side effects.

MECHANISM

How NMN fuels mitochondria

Once inside the cell, NMN is converted to NAD+, which then accepts electrons to become NADH. Those electrons drive the mitochondrial electron transport chain, producing ATP—the body’s primary energy currency. Dr. Schuster notes that NAD+ itself is too large to enter cells, making NMN the critical gateway. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) can also raise NAD+ levels, either by converting to NMN first or via separate transport pathways.

BENEFITS

Why take NMN

Elevating NAD+ via NMN supplementation supports a wide range of cellular functions. Dr. Schuster highlights improved mitochondrial energy, DNA protection and telomere maintenance, enhanced brain function, anti‑inflammatory effects, and better circadian rhythm leading to improved sleep quality.

DOSING & SAFETY

Practical supplementation

In his own protocol, Dr. Schuster takes 1 g of NMN powder daily, mixed with a fat‑rich carrier such as chocolate milk, kefir, or yogurt to enhance bioavailability. He also uses 830 mg of NR (Thorn NIAEL capsules) which are pre‑coated with fats. Human studies typically cap at 1 g per day, and no serious adverse events have been reported; the most common effect is modest energy and occasional fidgetiness.

REGULATORY

FDA stance and market

Dr. Schuster points out that the FDA is attempting to restrict NMN as a supplement because it cannot be patented as a natural molecule. He argues this reflects a profit‑driven approach rather than a safety concern, noting that NMN remains inexpensive, safe, and effective when sourced from reputable manufacturers.
